Modafinil is a legitimate drug, used to treat any kind of sleep disorders, ranging from erratic work hours, apnea and excessive sleepiness narcolepsy. Modafinil or modalert is also used to treat attention deficit hyperactive disorder or ADHD and ADD. Available in quite a few variants like 100 mg, 200 mg and 400 mg, modalert is popular among students during exams and among business professionals during exhaustive projects and meetings.  Though this is a legalised drug but can only be bought with valid prescriptions, given by doctors. The drug specifically acts on dopamine transport receptors in the brain and make them alert and energised. It also increases the levels of histamine, orexin, and norepinephrine within the brain, which in turn determine the sleep wake cycle in human body. There are lot of benefits, that result from consumption of modafinils. It helps to increase focus, concentration and energy levels, reduces mental exhaustions, increases motivation to work more and instils energy and enthusiasm to work on repetitive and tiresome activities.

Like other drugs, modafinil also has side effects and the list is pretty long. Some of the common side effects are stomach upset, nausea, rashes and skin allergies, headaches, insomnia, wooziness and anxiety. The side effects that can be severe and may impact the general health conditions are hypersensitivity, fever and chills, confusion in comprehension, unusual bleeding and blistering, chest pain, black stools and urination problems. Moreover, regular and excessive dosages of modafinil may also lead to hallucination, rapid heartbeats and severe depressions.

A prescribed dose of 200 mg daily in the morning only is suggested by most medical practioners, till the disorder is completely cured. The effect of the medicine remains prominent within the body for about 10 to 12 hours in the day. Moreover, this medicine is not prescribed during pregnancy and breastfeeding phases.

In a nutshell, modafinil or modalert is a registered drug to cure any kind of sleep disorders resulting from ADHD, sleep apnea and irregular work schedules. No drug is good and recommended for long term usages and modafinil is not an exception in this regard.  Prolonged uses of this may lead to physical and mental dependency on the drug and lot of severe modafinil side effects.
